Procession of the Madunnuccia in Ajaccio
Every year, on March 18, Notre-Dame de la Miséricorde, holy patroness of the city of Ajaccio, in Corsica, is celebrated traditionally and with fervor and communion by the residents of the city.
In the Imperial City, the commemorations begin the day before around the statue, where the population gathers to light candles. They continue throughout March 18, day-off, where the ajaccians attend the mass and begin a procession with the statue, decorated for the occasion, in the streets of the city. A celebration that the faithful have prepared all week in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption). It's she who, at the time, allowed Ajaccio to avoid the plague epidemic that raged in Italy and
particularly in Genoa.
Much more than a religious festival, A Madunnuccia is a highlight in the life of ajaccians. It's a major annual event, where thousands of people gather to commune.
