Aravis Distillery / THE NEW CRAFTSMEN
For more than a year, Romain and his sister Sarah have been reviving the Aravis Distillery. This historic establishment in La Clusaz, founded by Father Mathieu in 1876, is known for the production of a famous alcohol from the Alps: génépi.
After studying business in Lyon and after a frustrating start in working life, the two Ardèche natives exchanged the white shirt for the workshop jacket. In January 2020, they decided to buy back a business that had been auctioned off after a judicial liquidation. This change of course is a major gamble. Beyond integration into mountain life, they had to rehabilitate a place soiled by time, find a trusted farmer in Italy and find their marks in the design of the product and its dosage.
All this in times of health crisis. Even if the latter has a positive impact on their results: holidaymakers can no longer take advantage of the ski lifts, they naturally turn to the free visit of the distillery which ends with a tasting, a godsend for Romain and Sarah in these difficult times.
THE NEW CRAFTSMEN
They are bakers, distillers, shepherds, mechanics, oyster farmers, wine producers or ceramists. They have decided to follow their childhood dream or simply to retrain in a manual profession. Graduates in Higher Education, they have been working for a long time in a company to finally change course. From the simple awareness to the burn-out, the characters we meet start a quest for meaning by getting closer to the human being and looking for a new personal fulfillment far from the "open spaces".
"The New Artisans" is a series of atypical portraits of young working people who refuse to be disillusioned or to be pressured by the corporate world in order to make a living from their passion, to perpetuate a know-how, a tradition.
Note on the author: Théo Saffroy is a graduate of a business school. After working in the world of Telecoms, Spirits and Advertising, he decided in 2016 to stop everything to go on a motorcycle trip to South America for eight months. He travels 25,000 km, crossing 8 countries and documenting in photos and video the native communities of the continent. An initiatory journey and a trigger, that of becoming a photographer. Today he goes to meet his counterparts who work with their hands, likes to perfect, repeat the gesture and especially share it with people.
