VISMAVILLE IN CONTAINMENT // AT THE BALCON // Episode 7
Morale has returned. Probably because I finally got some exercise at home yesterday.
I meet Nabila on her balcony, on the phone with the doctor. She had a very bad night. Her son Eliam was sick last night. Difficulty breathing. Fever. But this morning, her little guy moved the garden furniture off the balcony... must be getting better. It's her first child. It's not easy not to get anxious. Especially right now.
I get off the sidewalk and stand on the street and greet a woman I see every day at the same time, walking her dog. This time, we're talking. Her name is Florence and she explains to me something that many people have to go through: a stupid accident for her yesterday, a fall, which caused a big bruise on her knee. A stinging pain takes her to the emergency room. She explains to me that she felt so illegitimate to be there. Guilt for taking up the time of this much talked-about healthcare worker.
Above us, a window opens: Nathalie with her little dog.
It's the first time I see her. She coughs a little. Apologizes... then explains to me: "I think I have coronavirus..." Our discussion suddenly becomes the attention of the people around us. "It's been about 10 days. I don't go out. It's the neighbor who takes my dog out."
"And you're taking care of yourself at home?" ... "Yes, and I'm meditating..." Ah the strength of the mind ...She explains to me that she is part of a meditation group and they meet on youtube. She even thinks it saved her! Yes... not everybody dies from this shit ! Besides, she tells me herself, she has a natural pathology, linked to her weight, which makes her have had moments of anxiety and fear of dying.
The man in the hat, who likes Indians, is there on the sidewalk. There. His name's Marcel. He's going shopping. This is the important moment to explain to you that I work with a telephoto lens, and that I spend my time backing up on the street (which fortunately isn't very busy) to keep safe distances.
So, Marcel, a man with caps and Amerindian jewels, meets another man, another Marcel with whom I had just started a conversation. I introduce them to each other. One lives at number 8 on the street, the other at number 10. They have never spoken to each other before.
Moreover, I also told Eleonore that her daughter Lina was named like the neighbour 2 aisles up the street. (Alya put on a great unicorn sweater for the photo today)
So, Marcel number 2, is waiting for the doctor to get a prescription for his wife. And that's when the doctor arrives with his FFP2 mask. Gilles. I introduce myself and explain to him that I work for the press. He greets me respectfully and accepts that I take a photo of him while he talks to Marcel. Then he asks me if I'm interested in meeting other doctors like him... " YES!" he takes my name, walks down the aisle for a consult with Eliam.
As I walk away, my front calendar opens in a new window: Lajput, an Indian who came to France 18 years ago and has been in his apartment for 15 years. Veelasha, the lady on the ground floor, mother of the 2 little boys from 2 days ago, says hello to me. She is beautiful. She is Mauritian.
Catherine and Madeleine are in the middle of a balcony to balcony discussion. Madeleine shows me her crochet work, she loves it.
Madame Lina is downstairs in her lovely red coat. She's masked and gloved. She's out trying to make photocopies of that damn certificate to fill in! She's out of ink in her printer. But she couldn't find... She rewrote the whole certificate by hand, on 2 pages !!!! It's crazy these ultra respectful people, (I love) and those who don't care. Besides, there are plenty of them in the park behind the building says she ....
It is almost 12 H. It's already been an hour that I'm here.
And speaking of respect, press pass or not, it would be appropriate for me to go home.
I was about to leave when my little miracle of the day happened: The man of the first day, the one thanks to whom all this life story began, appears on his balcony! There, I know his first name now: M'hamed. He is Kabil.
I thank him for what I am doing and I go home.
