AZF, 19 years later, Toulouse remembers
This Monday saw the commemoration of the 19th anniversary of the biggest industrial disaster that France has experienced since the Second World War: that of September 21, 2001 in Toulouse, on the site of the AZF (AZote Fertilisers) factory.
Recently, the events at the Lubrizol plant in Rouen and the port of Beirut have also reminded us of the importance of these technological and industrial risks. It is ammonium nitrate that is at the origin of the AZF disaster, and of the explosions in Lebanon on 4 August 2020. This chemical substance is notably used as a fertiliser for agriculture in a highly concentrated form, with major risks of detonation.
