Forest Man Of India
Forestman of india
Jadav Payeng, 56, has been planting trees since 1979. Forty years he has been visiting an island formed by alluvial deposits from the Brahmaputra near Jorhat in the state of Assam in India every day.
By the only will of this man, this fragile sandbank where nothing was growing has become a vast forest of 550 ha where nearly 250 species of trees can be found. The one that we now call "Forest Man of India" has quite simply recreated an ecosystem all by itself. And he does not intend to stop there because his island measures 2000 ha...
Here the life took again its rights thanks to a blow of inch of the Human being. It is finally quite rare. So Jadav Payeng has become a personality in the world of ecology, in spite of himself. He was invited to plant trees in Europe, Africa and America.
He is invited to speak at international conferences to share his vision of things. He educates and trains new generations by accompanying reforestation programs.
But by far his greatest pride is the return of wild animals to his island. Every year for the past 10 years, during the rainy season, elephants, unicorn rhinos and Bengal tigers have made a habit of migrating from Kazirenga National Park to "Molai forest. ».
In the beginning this new cohabitation aroused the anger of the inhabitants of the surrounding villages. There were tensions but today calm has returned. The forest and the fertile land are attracting more and more families.
When we talk to him about climate change, his answer is simple. "All you have to do is plant trees! "he says. "That's where it all starts.
His action has had a decisive effect on the erosion that threatened the fragile existence of this island. The roots of the trees secure the soil firmly and sustainably. Through his self-sacrifice, Jadav Payeng has succeeded in proving that man can have a positive impact on his environment.
